•Joan Paran is a nineteen year old girl who stays in the slum of Kawangware. She is the third child in a family of nine siblings. They all live in a one room sheet metal house.

•Joan lost her father five years ago after a short illness, in 2017. He had complained of chest pains for a few days and he ended up dying because the family could not afford to take him to hospital. Even before Joan lost her father, they had a hard time making ends meet. His passing really compounded their  tissues.

•Joan has taken and successfully passed the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education test and will attend high school as soon as she obtains a sponsor in order to proceed with her education.
